Cincinnati, Ohio, December 17th 2012 — More than 16 million Americans believe that December 21, 2012 will be the end of the world according to a new study by iPhone app developer Versaries, LLC.  The online study, conducted among more than a thousand Americans across the country, finds that 6.9% of them believe that Friday the 21st will be the end of the world – due to the Mayan apocalypse or some other doomsday scenario. That 6.9% represents more than 16 million people according to the US Census Bureau – a population larger than that of Illinois.

The trend is no surprise to iPhone app developer Daren Murrer, creator the countdown app Versaries™. “We always watch the buzz created through social media using the Versaries app,” says Murrer, “and plenty of people post about their anniversary, graduations, or other common special occasions. But by far, the most buzz comes from people anticipating the end of the world.”

Countdown to the End of the World with Versaries

Countdown to Anything, Including the End of the World With Versaries for iPhone

In May of 2011, the Versaries app was propelled to the top of the iTunes entertainment charts thanks to Christian radio broadcaster Harold Camping’s doomsday predictions.  When a user shared a countdown to the “end of the world” on Facebook, it brought more than 38,000 visitors to the Versaries website in less than 48 hours, temporarily crashing the service. “That’s when we knew we had a problem and something great happening” said Versaries co-founder Tom Humphrey

Despite attempts from politicians and even NASA to convince them otherwise, many Americans still believe that the end of the Mayan calendar on the 21st will be the end of days. The Versaries team is looking to help people mark the occasion by adding a new feature to the app. Now a partner of Walgreens Quickprints service, Versaries app users can create their own “End of the World” greeting cards and have them printed for pickup at their nearby Walgreens store. “If people think the world is ending next week, they might as well send a nice card to say goodbye” says Murrer.

The Versaries App is now free on the App Store.

Cincinnati, Ohio, November 8th 2011 — When Cincinnati entrepreneur Daren Murrer envisioned creating an iPhone App, he never imagined how that app would grow – and eventually alert him to a one-in-a-million coincidence: On November 11, 2011, Daren and his wife Kathy will have been married 11,000,000 minutes. That’s 11 Million on 11-11-11.

The app he created, called Versaries™, takes any date or special event and uncovers once-in-a-lifetime special occasions known as “Versary™” milestones. Thousands of Versaries users have used the app to find their own Versary occasions: turning 1 Billion Seconds old, being married longer than they were single, or any number of interesting milestones built into the app. When a milestone moment occurs, users get a Versary Alert so they can share the news with friends on Facebook and Twitter.

Daren and Kathy Murrer were married on December 12, 1990 at 2:00 in Cincinnati, OH. More than twenty years after they were married, Daren’s curiosity about time led him to develop what he thought was a simple app; “I just wanted to find out when we each would be married longer than had been single.” By the time the app was finished, Versaries™ was a beautiful-styled interactive tool that underneath its clockwork visuals hides more lines of code than Windows 3.1.

Thousands of development hours and a patent filing later, Murrer’s simple app idea has transformed into a growing startup. Earlier in the year, Versaries got a huge lift from Harold Camping’s doomsday predictions. When a user shared a countdown to the “end of the world” created in the app, it brought more than 38,000 visitors to the Versaries website in less than 48 hours. “That’s when we knew we had… something great happening” said Versaries co-founder Tom Humphrey.

With the recent boom in mobile apps, success is not surprising. Apple recently revealed that more than 15 billion applications had been downloaded for iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad. On average these users spend 73 minutes a day using apps. This Friday, November 11, 2011, Daren and Kathy Murrer will take a break from the fast moving world of mobile technology to celebrate their 11 Millionth Minute together and the couple are looking forward to 11 million more.

Members of the Versaries Team will be at Comic-Con international this Wednesday through Sunday in San Diego, CA.  We’re looking forward to one panel in particular: Steampunk Influences on Mainstream Media and Entertainment starting at 10am on Saturday.

If you want to chat with members of the Versaries development team, send us a note on Twitter @Versaries.

Versaries Version 1.1 brings a host of updates to the app:

  • We have now made it possible to add events right from the home screen.
  • Facebook posting is now user friendly – share your Versary Milestones even easier!
  • Hash tag can now be used when posting to Twitter from the Versaries Share Screen
  • Added improved crash reporting to solve issues faster in future updates.
  • A bug experienced by iPhones on 24-hour time should now be solved.

The Versaries team was part of Cincinnati’s Social Media Day 2011. The event was a huge success – worthy of the most social city in the world.

Special thanks to Cincinnati Social Media guru Anne Castleberry for organizing a great event.

Throughout beta testing and since our launch, we at  Versaries, LLC consistently get feedback about the great look and feel of the Versaries app.  Giving credit where credit is due, we sat down with Principle Creative, Chris Reiff.  Chris is a seasoned designer and illustrator with work seen in virtually every bookstore across the United States.  This is what he had to say about leading the creative effort behind  for Versaries, LLC:

Q:  What inspired the Versaries app look?
Chris:  There were many contributing themes that inspired the look of the app including clockwork mechanisms, steampunk, and even the TV show Wild Wild West.

Q:  Have you ever designed anything as complex of the Versaries app?
A:  Actually, yes.  I illustrated two sets of blueprints for DK Books which required a ton of detail.  More recently, I have been illustrating a Millennium Falcon 3D Owners guide – every detail of Han Solo’s ship from Star Wars has to be drawn to the tiniest detail.   In the toy world, the DragonBall Z action figure line featured some very complex yet small action figure mechanisms and detailed playsets.

Q:  What is your favorite feature in the Versaries app?
A:  I like the ability to switch between units by just touching the dial.  From an art standpoint, that part of the app required more than 10 layers to create.  Programming really brings it to life, making all of the reels move and spin.

Q: How long did it take to design and create the art for the Versaries app?
A: From initial rough concepts to various levels of final art, we probably took about six months.  That includes plenty of nights and weekends.
